Guide Review - Doña Cata Mexican Food
When you step through the doors at Doña Cata Mexican restaurant, you just know the food is going to be truly authentic: Spanish can be heard from the chefs, wait staff and other customers, Mexican music plays over the speakers, and the ambiance--like the decor--is bright, energetic and very welcoming.
The best reason to go to Doña Cata is the tacos. At $2 each, they're delicious and cheap; three or four will conquer the hardiest appetite. They come in beef, chicken, lamb, and vegetarian (beans and cheese) on two corn tortillas, and are the perfect vehicle for trying Doña Cata's truly extensive sauce and salsa bar.
When I went, the sauce and salsa bar had eight different choices, including a sweet (and not spicy) Tomate Verde, a very spicy Mexicana (a mix of tomato and jalapeno) and Cacahuate (peanut). If you fall in love with the salsas, you can take home 355ml for $4.30.
Also on the menu are 24 varieties of alambres--a mix of meat and vegetables and cheese grilled together and served with corn or flour tortillas. There's the Mexicano, a combination of pork, onion, jalapeno ratas, corn and cheese, the Pinguino, a mix of bisteck, bacon, and cheese, or the Vegetariano, a combo of mushrooms, onion, tomato, and cheese.
All the traditional favourites are available, too: burritos, carnitas, and a divine chicken in mole sauce.
