Even if winter doesn't get it's official start until the winter solstice, its unofficial start in Vancouver has to be the opening of the free winter ice skating at Robson Square.
Running daily from 9am-9pm Sunday to Thursday and 9am to 11pm Friday and Saturday, the Robson Square Ice Rink (located on Robson between Hornby and Howe, just across from the Vancouver Art Gallery in downtown Vancouver) is the only outdoor ice skating rink in Vancouver. And skating there is FREE (if you have your own skates). Skate rentals are available for $4; helmets and cleats are $2.
